In the past few years, February was usually about Fifty Shades of Grey and Valentine’s day. This year though the February will be slightly different. Besides Valentine’s day (that stays for the obvious reasons) there will be a nice mix of movies that will hit the theatres worldwide. And they will not be only about love, sex and rock, and roll.

Let’s see what those movies are.

What to watch in theaters this month? – The best movies coming to theaters in February 2020.

The 7th of February.

Birds of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn.

The first “worth-to-watch” movie on the list will hit the theaters on the 7th of February. It not only has the longest name from all the movies on the list but it will definitely make a huge impact in the cinemas.

Birds of Prey is a movie based on a comic book from DC Comics. Actually it is a follow-up movie of the Suicide Squad movie from 2016.

The movie is about several female characters lead by Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie). A supervillain and a former lover of the Joker. Among other characters appearing in the movie will be Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco) and Renee Montoya (Rosie Perez).

According to the rumors from Margot Robbie, who is actually the producer, the movie will be something “different” than we are used to seeing in the theatres. Also, the movie will be the first R-rated movie from the DCEU (DC Extended Universe) ever.

Official plot – IMDB: After splitting with the Joker, Harley Quinn joins superheroes Black Canary, Huntress, and Renee Montoya to save a young girl from an evil crime lord.

The official music score: in 2018 it was announced that the music will be created by Daniel Pemberton, an English composer.

Directed by: Cathy Yan (btw, the first Asian female director of a superhero movie)

Cast: Margot Robbie, Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Ewan McGregor

The 21st of February.

The Call of the Wild.

The Call of the Wild is a movie based on a novel from Jack London. The original novel was published back in 1903 and got many movies or cartoon adaptations.

The latest movie though will be the first one with live-action and computer animation. It is produced by 20 Century Studios (formerly 20 Century Fox, that was bought by Disney) and starring Harrison Ford as John Thorton and Terry Notary as the Buck via motion capture.

The story is situated in the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush in Alaska. Buck is a well kept and spoiled dog living in warm Santa Clara Valley in California. One day the assistant gardener steals and sells him as a service dog to Alaska.

Buck has to work hard and reach his limits to survive in wild nature. After a few adventures, he meets John Thorton. An outdoorsman that saves Buck from his sure death. Even though they will become friends, Buck will be slowly but surely getting closer to the wild. Will he resist the call of the wild at the end?

Official plotIMDB: A sled dog struggles for survival in the Alaskan wild.

Directed by: Chris Sanders

Cast: Harrison Ford, Karen Gillan, Terry Notary

Greed.

Have you ever imagined living a life in which you can afford everything? To own huge yachts, private planes, cars, houses, and travel wherever you want?

Sir Richard McCreadie (Steve Coogan) could tell you about it a lot. The fashion guru is close to his 60th birthday and he decides to organize an extravagant birthday party on a Greek island called Mykonos.

And you can bet that the party will be full of fun, alcohol but also huge surprises.

The movie is written and directed by Michael Winterbottom. Besides Steve Coogan, it will also star Asa Butterfield, Isla Fisher, and Sophie Cookson.

Official plot – IMDB: Satire about the world of the super-rich.

Directed by: Michael Winterbottom

Cast: Steve Coogan, Asa Butterfield, Isla Fisher, Sophie Cookson.

The 28th of February.

Sonic the Hedgehog.

Sonic is a superstar among the video games. It was created by a Japanese company called SEGA in the early 90s (more specifically it was found and released in 1991).

Sonic the Hedgehog movie will be a Sci-Fi action-adventure directed by Jeffrey Fowler. Actually it will be his feature directing debut. The movie is based on the video game and will contain almost all the major characters.

Sonic the Hedgehog (Ben Schwartz) will be hunted by a scientist Dr. Ivo Robotnik (Jim Carey) who is after Sonics super-speed powers. And he would like to dominate the world. During the hunt, Sonic will get help from a Green Hills Sherrif Tom Wachowski (James Mardsen). They will become friends and will face the fanatic Dr. Robotnik together.

From this movie, you can expect a gentle family-friendly fun with many jokes, funny moments and interesting action. Also, let’s see in what shape is Jim Carey who in my opinion delivered solid acting the last time in Yes Man (2008).

Official plot IMDB: A cop in the rural town of Green Hills will help Sonic escape from the government who is looking to capture him.

Directed by: Ben Schwartz

Cast:  Jim Carrey, Adam Pally, James Marsden

Guns Akimbo.

Guns Akimbo is a complete electropunk mindfuck. The movie is a combination of the Kick-Ass (2010), Crank (2006), Deadpool (2016), and Surrogates (2009).

Miles (Daniel Radcliffe) is working in a super boring day-to-day job and he is still in love with his ex Nova (Natasha Liu Bordizzo). One day he is being attacked at his home by a gang called SKIZM. He wakes up with two guns attached to his hands. SKIZM is an organization running deadly games that are broadcasted live on the internet.

He gets 24 hours to kill his opponent. In the meantime he is also being hunted by a crazy serial killer Nix (Samara Weaving). Few crazy shootings later they create a masterplan of taking the SKIZM down.

When that happens SKIZM kidnaps his ex-girlfriend, Nova. And the game will start again. Miles will have to stop running and start fighting to save his love.

Official plot – IMDB: A guy relies on his newly-acquired gladiator skills to save his ex-girlfriend from kidnappers.

Directed by: Jason Lei Howden

Cast: Daniel Radcliffe, Samara Weaving, Rhys Darby
