2020 is definitely one of the worst years for the cinematography world. Due to the coronavirus and the COVID_19 pandemic, there are not so many movies filmed and hitting the theaters. Unfortunately, we do not know yet, when this will change and the production will be restarted and cinemas will be reopened.

On the other hand, there are online streaming platforms like Netflix, that can still produce and release high-quality movies during this time.
And Netflix’s newest original movie Extraction is definitely proof of that. And why? What is the Extraction movie actually about? Is it really worth watching?
Extraction movie (2020) – Netflix Original Movie preview
The movie is about a mercenary Tyler Rake (Chris Hemsworth) and his latest mission. He is hired to rescue a son of a crime lord from a dangerous and one of the most impenetrable cities.
Extraction is directed by Sam Hargrave who is an American stuntman and director. By the way, this will be his directing debut. Hargrave is also known for his collaboration with the Russo brothers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They worked together on Captain America: Civil War, and Avengers: Endgame, where Hargrave was the stunt coordinator. If you watched those movies, you know that he did a great job.
Also, he has appeared as an actor in the Atomic Blonde (2017) movie with Charlize Theron and James McAvoy.
Extraction is all about great action scenes where stunts and actors are pushed to their limits. To see how much Hargrave was involved in the shootings you can see in the videos below.
By far the most complicated action sequence I’ve ever been part of, and if it wasn’t already complex enough, our director decided to shoot it as a “oner” — almost 12 minutes long and it’s about as exhausting to watch as it was to film. Strap in folks! pic.twitter.com/zQZtzm7tRW

Quite happy to let the completely insane experts handle this particular shot! Our stunt team risked their lives and pushed their bodies to get some of these shots, and it’s truly incredible to see. The movie wouldn’t have been possible without these guys ??? pic.twitter.com/E79rnkXm1T

Extraction movie (2020) – Netflix Original Movie spoiler-free review
I’ve seen many action movies created around a single hero. A hero that is super skilled and has nothing to lose. Someone who can destroy a whole army without getting hit and bring the mission to success.
On the other hand, such movies almost always have one missing piece. And that’s the depth of the story. Even though Sam Hargrave and Joe Russo did their best, they simply missed that point too.
Tyler is a fearless mercenary and Ovi is an ordinary young man. But you don’t feel anything else. The movie is flat emotionally and the main characters lack any development. This is a slight disappointment from someone like the Russo brothers. Here I would expect a storyline that simply beats any other one.
And to be very honest CGI effects are not the greatest too. Seems that Hemsworth took a big portion of the budget and left no so much money for the effects.
What I do see though as the main positive, is the “straight to the point” action. The fight scenes are well designed and it is really visible that an expert is behind them. I see Hargrave as a director with a huge potential to create excellent movies. But if he will continue to focus only on the action, he will never make it further than Netflix.
The Extraction is full of “straight to the point” action and it will satisfy all the Chris Hemsworth fans. But that’s it. Let’s not make it a super movie just because it is the first movie premiere in weeks.
